Melissa from Lezbackpack and I have a shared Femme Travel Style Pinterest Board where we share our favorite looks for adventuring. When you travel for weeks (or months) at a time with nothing but a 32 litre backpack, styling can get really complicated. Inspired by our pinterest board and my European adventure with #MyGayPride I put together this 15-piece, nomad inspired, femme summer travel starter wardrobe. Do remember to keep your wardrobe culturally sensitive and appropriate for the country you’re visiting. Shorts and cropped tops might not be appropriate in all places around the world.

Tops

Boyfriend Fit V-Neck T-shirt

Loose fitting T-shirts are a cool and comfortable look that can be super versatile. Wear it with skinny denim for a casual chic look. Dress it up with a pencil skirt and statement necklace. Throw it over a dress and knot it at your waist to add another style combination to your pack. Buy this one at Urban Outfitters.

Cropped Tank Top

I actually own this tank and I love it. I usually wear it with a pair of high waisted shorts or my Thai fisherman pants I bought in Chiang Mai. Complete side note; I was super excited to get those pants in Thailand because I thought they were so cool and unique. When I got back to the US six months later I realized they were everywhere. Anywhoo… back to this cropped tank. It’s made of a really high quality knit fabric and is super soft. You can get it in a bunch of different colors here.

Strappy Back Bralette Top

I’ve been craving one of these for a couple seasons. I’ve yet to find one that suits my DDs. Let me know in the comments if you’ve found one. I think it looks super cute underneath a low back dress or side cut out tank. At a $20 price point, you can’t really go wrong here. Buy it at Free People.

Kimono Style Cover Up

Loose flow cover ups are a great way to keep warm without losing your style. I used scarves and kimonos all over Asia. They double as blankets, bathing suit wraps, and really jazz up a basic outfit. I used mine on my flight from Korea to the US. It gets super chilly on planes. I wrapped up and took a nap. Once I got off the plane my kimono was wrinkle free and good to go on my way through the airport. Grab this one or dozens more like it at ASOS.

Bottoms

High Waisted Shorts

High waisted shorts are my go to look right now for looking effortlessly put together and still comfy. It really works on a curvy frame that is small in the middle. These are a staple piece in my travel suit case. I can pair them with a basic t-shirt or a cropped tank for completely different looks. I own the ones in the picture below and you can get them at Urban for super cheap.

Festival Cut Offs

Festival cut offs are a bit longer than the high waisted shorts I featured above. Sometimes you want something thats a little bit more modest without losing the sexy edge. These shorts can be found at Urban.

Maxi Dresses

I’m only 5’3 so finding a maxi dress that doesn’t overwhelm me has turned out to be rather difficult. I’m obsessed with them. Probably because I can never find ones that work for me. I love the strappy low back on this one from Urban.

Accessories

Mirrored Raybans

Rayban aviators have been my signature sunglasses for years now. I bought my first pair back in 2011 and took meticulous care of them. Unfortunately, I left them at Dinah Shore this year & thus have to invest in a new pair. These are a splurge, but definitely my first choice. I’ll have to save my pennies and buy them online.

Crystal Necklace

My mom had one of these in the 90s. At the time I thought it was magical. I still kinda feel that way. A crystal necklace is the perfect compliment to your boho look. They’re wildly popular and pretty much everywhere on the internet. I found this one for less than $6 at Forever 21 and it comes in a few different colors.

Versatile bag

Your bag is probably the most important part of your travel wardrobe. You need somewhere to stash all your extra goodies that you don’t carry on an average days. For me, I’m a brochure hoarder. I love grabbing business cards, pamphlets and advertisements. It helps me write blog posts and articles later on. I have to have a good bag to put them in… enter Herschel. They make cute and practical bags. The Little America Backpack happens to be a personal favorite. It has a padded sleeve for my laptop and a hidden compartment for other electronics. Plus a hidden zipper and keys/wallet clip to ward off pickpockets.

Felt Hat

I’m obsessed with hats recently. They’re awesome for traveling because they hide unflattering hair styles and keep the sun out of your eyes. I was recently in LA (aka the land of dykes with style) and learned two things. 1. hats are very IN right now. 2. Snapbacks and fitteds are no longer a thing. This one is from Forever 21 is super cute and inexpensive.

Strappy Sandals

I’m cursed with wide flat feet. My girlfriend, Lindsay, refers to them as my “Fred Flintstone feet” cute visual right? We’re constantly searching for a shoe that is functional, seasonally appropriate and not completely hideous. I love these ones from ASOS, Lindsay says they don’t have enough arch support, but ya know… whatever.

High Waisted One- Piece Bathing Suit

I’m a curvy girl with an hour glass and really short legs. One piece suits like this highlight my small waist and elongate my legs. Plus it doubles as a cute top when paired with a high waisted skirt. I also love that this suit is a one piece but still sexy. I usually wear bikinis but this one had me at first sight. Buy it online at ASOS.
