Broadway Ticket Hacks to Help You Score the Perfect Seats

MEG CALE

Confession Time: When I was in the fifth grade I watched my VHS tape of Spice World so many times that I broke the tape. Then I cried, for an embarrassingly long time. I was the worst kind of 90’s fangirl. I had Teen Beat posters plastering my walls and “I <3 JTT” non-ironically scribbled all over my Lisa Frank trapper keepers in puffy paint.

I still harbor a soft spot in my heart for tellin ya what ya really really want. [see what I did there?]
So I was STOKED to hear that Mel B aka Scary Spice aka the queen of my prepubescent heart was going to be appearing on Broadway in Chicago the musical from December 28, 2016 through February 19, 2017. SLAY girl SLAY. Broadway hasn’t been this gay since RENT or Broadway Bears or… okay – Broadway is always pretty gay – but you get my point.

For those who don’t know Chicago is a musical set amidst the decadence of the 1920s. Think burlesque performances in a women’s prison. Chicago is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today’s tabloids.

It’s entertaining and filled with sexy dance numbers.

In honor of my 90s girl crush I’m giving you these Broadway ticket hacks to score some great seats for a cheap broadway performance in New York City.

Timing is Key

As with any travel related expense- scheduling a trip at peak season is going to result in more expensive tickets than booking during the offseason. The slow months for Broadway shows are January, February, September, and October. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to catch Mel B on Broadway during that time, but you can still see a lot of great performances at a cheaper price. Broadway Week, is  every year in late January with 2-for-1 tickets to the best shows in town.

Use Reward Points

Audience Rewards has some great opportunities to earn and redeem rewards points. They also offer special events like after show Q&A sessions or meetups with your favorite stars. I’d LOVE to be able to meet Mel B – but alas – this was not offered for Chicago. Lots of rewards programs offer an option for theater tickets, check with your bank, credit card company, or frequent flier programs to see if you can benefit. Telecharge is great – their site shows American Express preferred seating directly on the ordering website.

Standing Room

Standing for an entire Broadway performance is not my personal idea of a good time – but to each their own. Some super fans would definitely stand if they got the chance to see Hamilton. Typically they only sell standing room tickets once a performance is completely sold out, so you could be standing there waiting two minutes before curtain time. It could pay off BIG time though, it’s not unheard of to see an award winning performance for $20-$30 USD. It’s a gamble though, you may not get in.
